Chapter Twenty-Four

“I miss the old couch.”

There was no one around to hear Abby’s declaration, and therefore no reason to feel defensive about it, but Abby defended it nevertheless. After all, what was the point of talking to yourself if you couldn’t steer the conversation?

“We never should have thrown it out. It wasn’t old; it was vintage. And the taupe went with everything.”

Well, that might be a stretch—not only had her grandparents’ couch aged to a color that was more dirt-brown than taupe by the time Abby hauled it to the dump, it also had springs poking through the thin spots in the cushions. Nevertheless, Abby still had fond memories of watching Warriors games on that old couch on nights her mom had to work late, a bowl of popcorn between her and Owen while Gramps yelled at the television from his recliner.

It wasn’t the same watching tonight’s game from the newer sectional. That had to be why she couldn’t seem to settle in and watch the pregame show.

“Aw, hell,” Abby sighed, because in a one-sided conversation you had to call bullshit on yourself. And the truth was that though she’d planned on spending the evening clearing out her work email inbox, the only thing she’d had her eyes on was the television. Squirming in her seat, she scanned the stadium for Steph and Isaac.

If only she had a Ships story to work on. But a week after the last disastrous show, neither she nor Steph had heard from Ben, and Abby could only assume they had been banned.

Steph was taking it surprisingly well. When Abby had filled her in on the argument she and Ben had on the way home—without mentioning how Ben had made the connection—Steph hadn’t seemed overly concerned.

“Oh, Abs, sweetie,” she’d said. “Don’t worry. Ben isn’t the kind to stay angry long. I’m sure after he calms down, I can sweet-talk him into letting us compete again.”

“I don’t know,” Abby hedged. Steph hadn’t seen just how upset—and hurt—he’d been.

“Trust me.” Steph was undaunted. “We’ll let him stew until after the Warriors game. By then, I’m sure he’ll be begging us to come back.”

Well, at least one of them was staying optimistic. Abby, on the other hand, was miserable. Not only had she been a total ass to one of her closest friends, she’d also thrown away one of the few things that brought her real joy—writing for Ships.

Naturally, the next show was themed around one of Abby’s all-time favorite authors—Edith Wharton. She couldn’t help believing Ben had made the choice out of spite, knowing how disappointed Abby would be to miss out.

If that was his plan, it had worked. All week long, Abby couldn’t stop thinking up great scenes that would never see the light of day. In her favorite, Countess Olenski’s carriage flipped over into a ditch, leaving her to the mercy of her maid Nastasia’s four strapping brothers…

Abby was about to force herself back to email tedium when the TV zoomed in on a black-clad
